La Morena began with four women growers and a small shipment of coffee. Today, it represents a much larger opportunity for women in Guatemala’s coffee industry.
Created by Genuine Origin in 2016, the program connects women coffee producers with the global specialty coffee market and works to address gender inequality in coffee farming. Its first shipment included just 32 boxes from four members of the International Women’s Coffee Alliance.
Roasters quickly embraced the coffees, and the lot sold out.
By 2023, the program’s sourcing team was working with more than 800 women farmers across Huehuetenango and Baja Verapaz. What began as a small introduction had grown into a platform giving more producers access to buyers who recognize the quality of their work.
This coffee is part of that continuing story: skilled women growing exceptional coffee and gaining greater recognition for what they bring to the cup.
