  • What is Specialty Coffee?
Specialty coffee is to regular coffee what craft beer is to mass-produced beer—more care, more quality, more character.
  • What is small batch roasting?
Small batch roasting is a coffee roasting method where beans are roasted in limited quantities, typically under 30 pounds (13 kg) per batch, depending on the equipment. It’s a cornerstone of specialty coffee, emphasizing quality, control, and consistency over mass production.
  • Why is freshly roasted coffee better?
☕️ Fresh Roasted Coffee: Roasted within days or weeks, often marked with a roast date. Brewed within 2–4 weeks of roasting for peak flavor. Has vibrant, complex flavors—you can taste fruit, chocolate, spices, or floral notes depending on the bean. Often roasted in small batches by specialty roasters who prioritize quality and origin. Ground to order or kept whole bean to preserve flavor and aroma. 🏬 Grocery Store Coffee: Often roasted months before it hits the shelf, with no roast date—only a "best by" date. Usually pre-ground, which loses freshness quickly. Tastes flat, bitter, or generic due to staleness and mass production. Focuses on shelf life, not flavor. Sourced from large, blended lots, with little or no info about origin or farmers.
  • Do you sell ground coffee?
We sell whole bean coffee and encourage you to grind your coffee right before brewing. This is so you have the best experience and taste in your cup!
  • How long will my coffee stay fresh after roasting?
Your small beanz coffee reaches peak flavor 3-7 days after roasting and maintains excellent quality for 3-6 weeks when stored properly. Here's the timeline: Days 1-3: Coffee is still degassing CO2 from roasting Days 4-14: Peak flavor window - optimal for all brewing methods Days 15-28: Still excellent quality, especially for espresso and darker roasts After 30 days: Noticeable flavor decline, though still drinkable Since we roast in small batches and ship quickly, you're getting coffee much fresher than typical grocery store options. We recommend ordering quantities you'll consume within 2-4 weeks for the best experience.
  • What's the best way to store my coffee beans?
We recommend following these storage guidelines to preserve your small beanz coffee's unique flavor profile: DO: Store in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture Keep beans in their original bag with the one-way valve, then place in an airtight container Store at room temperature in a pantry or cupboard Buy whole beans and grind just before brewing DON'T: Store in the refrigerator or freezer (causes condensation and flavor absorption) Leave beans in direct sunlight or near heat sources Use containers that aren't airtight Store pre-ground coffee for extended periods The key is protecting against coffee's four enemies: air, light, heat, and moisture. Our eco-friendly packaging includes a one-way valve that lets CO2 escape while keeping oxygen out.
  • How can I tell if my coffee has gone stale?
Here are the telltale signs that your Small Beanz coffee is past its prime: Visual/Physical Signs: Beans appear oily or have a dull, matte finish (for light-medium roasts) No visible CO2 release when grinding fresh beans Grounds don't "bloom" when hot water is added Aroma Indicators: Weak or absent coffee aroma when opening the bag Musty or cardboard-like smell instead of rich coffee fragrance Loss of the distinctive origin characteristics we highlight in our coffee descriptions Taste Changes: Flat, lifeless flavor lacking complexity Increased bitterness without balanced sweetness Loss of the unique tasting notes described on your coffee's profile Remember, our small-batch approach means you're starting with exceptionally fresh coffee, so these changes typically won't occur for several weeks with proper storage.
  • Should I grind my beans all at once or as needed?
Always grind your Small Beanz coffee just before brewing for the best flavor experience. Here's why: Whole Bean Advantages: Maintains freshness 5-10 times longer than pre-ground Preserves the complex flavor compounds we carefully develop during roasting Allows you to adjust grind size for different brewing methods Retains the aromatic oils that create our coffees' distinctive profiles Pre-Ground Drawbacks: Exponentially increases surface area exposed to air Loses 60% of aroma compounds within 15 minutes of grinding Cannot optimize grind size for your specific brewing method If you must pre-grind, only grind what you'll use within 24-48 hours and store in an airtight container. This approach aligns with our mission to help you achieve an elevated coffee experience at home.
  • Can I freeze my coffee beans for long-term storage?
While not ideal for daily use, freezing can work for long-term storage with proper technique: Proper Freezing Method: Divide beans into weekly portions in airtight, freezer-safe containers Remove air completely to prevent freezer burn Thaw completely before opening container (prevents condensation) Never refreeze once thawed Better Alternatives: Order smaller quantities more frequently to ensure freshness Take advantage of our subscription service for regular deliveries Store properly at room temperature and consume within 3-4 weeks Given our focus on small-batch roasting and quick shipping, we recommend ordering fresh coffee regularly rather than freezing. This ensures you experience the full complexity of flavors we've carefully developed in each roast.
